Our History

Founded in 1905, Skanem has more than 100 years of experience in the packaging industry. Through this entire period we have achieved continuous growth and strong customer relations.

Skanem is founded in Norway under the name "Stavanger Blikktrykkeri og Maskinverksted" (Stavanger Metal Printing and Production Workshop).

The company becomes part of the Pechiney Group and changes its name to Skanem. The name Skanem is introduced by the Pechiney Group as it is much simpler to pronounce. The word Skanem is a combination of two words, one being Scandinavia and the other a French word Emballage. The Pechiney group introduces the newest technology in Skanem, and doubles its turnover. Skanem becomes the only supplier and patent holder of easy open metal cans in Norway. At the same time manual involvement is reduced to half and Skanem has approx. 50 employees.

Ole Rugland, present day Executive Chairman, joins Skanem as Managing Director in 1985. He works with Skanem for a year and a half, understands the business completely and in Aug 1986 he finally performs a management buy out of the company, thus acquiring Skanem.

Skanem works towards consolidation of all metal can production companies throughout Norway. The strategy is to focus solely on the metal canning part of packaging and to be the strongest player in the market.

Noblikk Sannem is acquired by Skanem. It was established as a tin packaging factory in Bergen, Norway. The factory later merged with another factory called 'Noblikk' in Moss, to form Noblikk Sannem which in turn was acquired by Skanem in 1991.

Skanem spreads out of Norway and acquires Hydrocan and Nordisk Blik in Denmark.

The demand and market for metal cans in the food category reduces in Scandinavia and Skanem decides to venture into the self adhesives category.

Skanem acquires SE Labels.

Most of the food related Metal Packaging and Film companies are sold, in accordance with the strategy to focus on self adhesive labels. Skanem retains the metal packaging plant in Moss of Norway (Skanem Moss) and a soft PVC plant in Ronneby of Sweden (Riflex Film AB).

Skanem Group acquires Introl Poland in Poznan and Introl Print Russia in Moscow. Skanem Group moves into the Eastern European market.

Skanem Bangkok opens for business. One of Skanem's larger customers approach Skanem with growing demands in Thailand. Skanem builds own production plant and office in Bangkok from scratch. Skanem has since long believed in adding value to the customer's supply chain and the Bangkok plant is proof. This is Skanem Group's first step in the Asian market.

Skanem identifies growing markets in India and Africa. Interlabels India and Interlabels Kenya is acquired. Skanem Group continues to invest and expand in Skanem Interlabels India and Kenya throughout 2012 and 2013.
